Austyn Taylor

3
Trained in New York and now based in the coastal forests of Albion, California, Austyn Taylor pursues a nomadic practice of ceramics and sculpture, moving between residencies and travels. Her works also circulate globally and have entered collections in Japan, Mexico, Lebanon, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Spain, China, France, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United States, Germany, Canada, Denmark, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong.

At the heart of her work, Taylor envisions a world populated by hybrid, joyful, and singular creatures. Since childhood, she has translated her reflections on the human condition, animality, free will, and the brutality and poetry of the natural world into drawings, and, since 2012, into clay. Ceramics thus become the medium for a bestiary inspired by Saturday-morning American cartoons, Japanese Shinto video games, and sculptures discovered in art and archaeology museums.

These characters, born from a need for companionship and imagination, now take shape in real space and travel the world. Blending humor, tenderness, and a hint of melancholy, Austyn Taylor’s universe offers a luminous counterpoint to the complexity of human existence, transforming ceramics into a playground for shifting and invented identities.
