Anthony Sonnenberg

1
Anthony Sonnenberg (born in 1986 in Graham, Texas) is an American artist whose practice is rooted in a baroque, sensual, and deeply ironic exploration of material and symbolism. Working across ceramics, sculpture, and performance, he reinterprets the codes of the decorative and the sacred, the kitsch and the refined, questioning the tension between excess and fragility.

Educated at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Washington in Seattle, Sonnenberg has developed a visual language in which ceramics engage in dialogue with the history of art, from the Baroque to contemporary queer culture. He has taught at several institutions, including the University of Arkansas and Hendrix College, while also exploring the performative dimension of sculpture.

His work has been exhibited in the United States and internationally, notably at Mindy Solomon Gallery (Miami), Gavlak Gallery (Los Angeles, Palm Beach), Conduit Gallery (Dallas), and Galerie Italienne (Paris). His pieces are included in major collections such as the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art and the Fidelity Investments Collection.

Through his lush and emotionally charged compositions, Sonnenberg explores the tension between beauty and decay. His ceramics become a stage for an ornamental and fragile drama, where matter both celebrates and questions the human condition.
