Anthony Sonnenberg

Decadent, Anthony Sonnenberg's creations certainly are… but in the most aesthetic sense of decadence, as they take us back to the legendary splendor of lost empires. From the Greek world to the Rococo style, the artist draws from twenty-five centuries of artistic excess, captured in porcelain or bronze. Vases, amphorae, candelabras, or brightly colored jewelry make up the unique work of someone who likes to define himself as a contemporary Silenus, a deity closely associated with Dionysus. Yet these multiple inspirations convey no sense of nostalgia, for if the spectator closely observes his sculptures, he will identify countless modern trinkets, familiar and cleverly integrated into each structure. A humorous and decidedly contemporary nod from a free spirit who draws the best from all eras.
