Signée, Céramique émaillée

Alice Colonieu, a ceramic artist from southern France, holds a unique place in the history of 20th-century ceramics.
Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, she developed an early fascination with clay. Her career is deeply rooted in Provence, where she chose to live and work, finding in its luminous landscape and atmosphere a constant source of inspiration.

From the outset, Colonieu stood out for her original approach at the crossroads of art and craft. She created unique pieces as well as monumental decorative ensembles: mural panels, architectural reliefs, fountains, and ceramic frescoes, that still adorn public and private buildings across southern France today, including the post office in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the Frédéric-Mistral school complex in Avignon, and altars for the churches of Roaix, Sablet, and Valréas.

Her aesthetic universe is characterized by a rich interplay of forms and colors. Colonieu explored glazes, textures, and contrasts, drawing inspiration from nature, fauna and flora, and Mediterranean symbols to create a vibrant, imaginative world.

Today, her works are being rediscovered and celebrated by galleries and institutions that recognize the importance of her contribution. They reflect bold creativity, remarkable technical mastery, and a deep sensitivity to material and light. Alice Colonieu leaves behind a significant legacy through creations that embody her conviction that ceramics are not merely objects, but spaces of contemporary beauty.
